Manchester’s Metamorphosis
February 2025
Manchester’s architecture is a reflection of its spirit—restless, resilient, and always evolving.
I moved here in the mid-90s when the city was reeling from the IRA bombing of the Arndale Centre. Back then, the city was low-rise, and the scars of the past were visible. Manchester responded, transforming tragedy into renewal.
That same energy continues today with the redevelopment of the old Bootle Street police station by Gary Neville’s consortium, in the city’s St Michael’s Quarter.
I have very close ties to the site - Sellick Partnership is in Queens Court, part of the SMQ - and I’ve watched the historic old police station become part of a fantastic new development.
Blending heritage with modern design isn’t easy, but here, it’s been done masterfully - preserving the old while embracing the new.
Gary’s done a great job - albeit not without a few missteps - but it’s exciting to see Manchester continue to grow and redefine itself.
It’ll be great to see what emerges from the wrappings around Manchester’s famous town hall, in the original Albert Square 😉 - when they’re finally lifted too. It's such an iconic building.
So good to see Manchester’s restless energy at work.
