The Workplace Revolution
March 2025
There’s been a revolution taking place in the world of work for a while and it’s about to accelerate.
The era of jobs for life disappeared a decade ago. We all know about the need for constant career development - and switching career paths two or three times is normal.
Young job hunters turning the tables and interviewing employers is an accepted part of the process - and turning companies down if the work-life balance or the values don’t fit.
And of course the impact of AI in the workplace and in the recruitment process is taking root everywhere. It seems like only yesterday that AI was a new thing - but now the early-adopters and their algorithms are looking past their use-by date.
I met Jim Knight at the House of Lords yesterday in the latest part of the ‘discovery’ stage for my next venture. Jim - Baron Knight of Weymouth more formally, and a former MP and minister - is one the leading experts on the intersection of education, training, and technology.
In addition to his non-exec portfolio, he’s chief education officer at Tes (what used to be the Times Educational Supplement) and a regular speaker in the Lords on 'ed-tech'. He was really interested and insightful on the changes in the education and work.
We discussed the potentially daunting times ahead for younger people as well as existing people in the workforce as the rapid speed of AI learning takes centre-stage in business and society.
It was fascinating to hear his thoughts on the “prize” out there for managing people’s careers that are removed via technology in a way that they don’t end up on the employment ‘scrap heap’. This is going to be a real problem as AI starts to erode middle tier jobs and careers across the world.
It’s all great material and insight as me and my partners shape our own next career venture.
Thanks to Jim, and to Jonathan Berry, Viscount Camrose, who brokered our meeting. I hope soon to be able to reveal a bit more. Watch this space.
